Hugo Boss - Superb Suits

Hugo Boss started out as a small workshop in Metzingen, Germany. Founded in 1923, and named after its founder, it claimed a controversial spot in history; having produced the Nazi SS uniforms and utilizing forced labor from France and Poland in World War II, when uniforms were in great demand.

The company started out with industrial worker suits, uniforms and raincoats. Boss died in 1948 and grandsons Uwe and Jochen Holy took over and geared it towards the more promising path of menswear. The company released its very first suit design for men in 1953.

Competition was stiff in the German market in the 1960s so the brothers decided to create men's suits in colorful hues made from durable, quality fabrics by Gaenslen & Voelter. Over the decade, Hugo Boss bested other companies by introducing trendier suits made of light Italian fabric, in contrast to the traditional German suits that were made of rigid and heavy ones.

Boss pioneered product export during the 70s, conquering Western Europe first, then the Atlantic and finally, the United Sates in 1976. The high-priced line instantly gained acceptance in America, as popularized by renowned figures such as Sylvester Stallone, Bjorn Borg and the Miami vice cops. By the 80's, the company had already passed the DM 100 million sales mark.

The company made another remarkable turn in 1984 when it launched its first fragrance along with affordable casual wear like sweaters and sports jackets. A year later, the company went public and renamed itself Hugo Boss AG (Aktiengesellschaft, which is German for a corporation that is owned by shareholders). By 1987, the company was grossing $500 million per annum.

A big portion of the company was sold to the Japanese Leyton Group in 1989, although the Holy brothers remained active in the management process. Three years later, they resigned whilst retaining designer stores in Munich and Stuttgart under the Hugo Boss Company. Marzotto became a major shareholder in 1991 and hired Peter Littmann as the new CEO. In response to the economic recession, two more labels were added namely Hugo - for the young and hip professional, and Baldessarini - for the classy top executive. Within a year, profits increased up to 74% and the company further expanded to the Southeast Asian region. In 1997, the company promised to reimburse to slave laborers post World War I.

Littmann was succeeded by chief designer and marketing manager Werner Baldessarini in 1998. This was also the time that the company started to design and launch lifestyle accessories and its very first collection of women's wear. Over the years, the company introduced more labels, including the more casual Boss Golf and Boss Sport lines, and Boss Black Selection. In 1999, another line - the sporty Boss Orange - was successfully launched.

At present Hugo Boss remains a subsidiary of Marzotto S.p.A., under the Valentino Fashion Group, which owns a 50% share in the firm. It remains to be one of the world’s top fashion lines, with Germany being its leading consumer and the United States as the second. It holds more than 350 franchise shops in over 90 countries around the world.

Rado watches are quite simply, unique. The company has an obsession in making fine watches from the most sophisticated and technically advanced of man-made of materials. Reading a little bit about how these watches are made is like reading a piece of sci-fi literature. One can't quite believe that such incredible, ground-breaking science is used to make something that merely tells us the time.

Rado is a comparative new-comer in Swiss watch making. It didn't begin making watches until 1917 - most top Swiss watch manufacturers were already making watches for over a hundred years - and, it didn't really become a well-known manufacturer until the 1960s when it produced the Rado DiaStar, the World's first scratchproof watch.

It would be true to say that other manufacturers specialized in making ever more complicated movements - Patek Philippe watches for example - or found niches in diving or the aeronautic industry - like Rolex, Panerai and Breitling - but Rado has mainly specialized in making its watches indestructible.

That's not to say that the movements in Rado watches are inferior, quite the opposite. Each movement, whether it's quartz, mechanical or chronograph comes with a guarantee of having a Swiss quality watch movement, which has been extensively tested at the Rado factory.

But, without doubt it's the materials used in Rado watches that makes them unique. You'll find materials that are used by other watch manufacturers, like sapphire crystal for the glass, titanium used on case backs and clasps, and rubber straps. However, it's the developments and use of new materials like ceramics, hard metals and high-tech diamond coatings that's totally different.

Many Rado watches are coated with a layer of synthetic diamond to make them almost scratchproof. This is achieved by transforming carbon into nano-crystalline diamond particles, which are amalgamated onto the hard metal watch case forming a homogenous diamond layer. The synthetic diamond is created in furnaces that approach the atmospheric pressure of Jupiter.

Likewise, the ceramics produced are also very scratch resistant while also being very skin-friendly. The manufacture of the hard metal used in the watches is also a complex process; tungsten- or titanium-carbide is pressed at 1000 bar and further compressed in a super hot furnace at 1450°C.

Using advanced manufacturing techniques to make new, hard materials is all well and good, but what makes Rado watches so desirable is how these materials are used to create simple, almost stark designs of wrist watch.

The Rado V10k watch exemplifies the unity of high-tech materials and modern design. The watch features a curved sapphire crystal; the case is high-tech synthetic diamond that blends seamlessly with the black caoutchouc strap. The dial is a simple as you can find on any watch; two white arms - hour and minute - and nothing else. You won't even find a crown on the case - you set the time by use of a magnetic pin that is housed in the strap.

The Ceramica is another fine collection - my personal favorite. The case and strap links are made from high-gloss, scratch resistant ceramics, the glass is sapphire crystal and the clasp has a hidden push button deployment. Again the dial is simple, two simple, white hands, and unusual hour markers that run vertically down each side of the face.

Other Rado collections include the Sintra, Ovation, Anatom, Original, Cerix, and Esenza. Each collection offers something slightly different though each uses high-tech, hard materials.

There are a couple of points to be aware of with Rado watches. First, although there are often referred to as scratchproof, they can be scratched. Other materials that are in everyday use also approach diamond hardness; such as sandpaper, grindstones, granite surfaces and even concrete walls. Also, dropping the watch onto a hard surface can break them.

All watches are given a 30 meter water resistance certificate, however many household situations can mean water being applied that is close to the pressure of 30 meters, like power showers and Jacuzzis, so you should always first remove the watch. And, when changing the battery you should only use an authorized dealer to ensure the watch remains water-tight.

Rado watches aren't to everyone's liking. The designs are simple and can look distinctively retro at times. However, for those who appreciate the unique qualities of the materials used these watch are, and always have been, highly desirable.

I have already mentioned Paul McCartney, and there are many others like Curt Cobain, Tony Iommi, Jimi Hendrix and Slim Whitman.

Dick Dale, "King Of The Surf Guitar" is one notable exception to this rule. The first guitar he learnt to play on was a normal right handed guitar. So he forced his hands to learn to play without changing the order of the strings on the guitar. Even after he was able to buy custom made left handed guitars, he still played with the strings in the right hand positions because that is what he was used to. Bobby Womack and Albert King also play like this.

So what changes need to be made to a guitar to make it suitable for playing left handed? Well, when you hold a guitar in playing position the sixth string - the E string which is the thickest guitar string needs to be on top of the guitar, that is closest to your shoulder. To achieve this the order of the strings needs to be reversed. If you hold a right handed guitar in front of you and look straight at it, the sixth string is on your right hand side. To string the guitar for left handed playing, the first string should be on the right hand side.

Also, the two parts of the guitar that actually hold the strings on - the bridge and the nut need to be changed around. If you look closely at these parts you will see that they have slots cut in them to hold the strings. Naturally the nut and bridge will need to be turned upside down to fit the strings in the reverse order.

Now for the question of buying left handed guitars. Many guitarists complain that left handed guitars cost around double the price of right handed guitars, so you will need to do some serious shopping. Tokai and Vintage make serviceable mid-range left handed guitars for a reasonable price,. Fender make all the 'basic' model Telecasters and Stratocasters for leftys, and Gibson make left handed versions of all their flagship guitars.

Now let us look at another challenge for left handed guitarists - chord charts. If you do a search on the web you will find a range of printed left handed chord charts and chord generators. A good on to start with is "Left Handed Guitar Chord Chart", by Robert Tarchara. There are also books that are written especially for left handed guitar players:

Heavy Wall

A design wall is a place on a wall where we can hang units of a quilt. This permits the quilter to stand back and scrutinize the design before sewing the quilt. Quilters often dangle batting or plain white flannel on their design walls, because quilt blocks tend to stick to it effortlessly without pinning.

A design wall is one of the tools that are of immense advantage to any quilt-maker. It allows her to stand back and assess the flow of colors, the combination effect and the effects of various patterns in a current quilt making project. In the initial stages, a design wall helps us to cut out and accumulate block or appliqué pieces to assess whether the selection and combination of colors are working. As work progresses, we can also mount each new section as and when we finish so that we can assess the work and make necessary changes. You can make various color adjustments in the borders based on what you perceive about the middle of the quilt while it hangs on the design wall.

How to Create a Design Wall

A further piece of good news is that a design wall is not difficult to make at all. However we must take certain aspects into consideration.

o The size - The larger the area of the wall, the bigger the design wall can be. It is best to have the design wall on a wall that you can stand at least eight feet away from. The best way to analyze a design is to review it standing away from it. The next decision to be taken is whether the design wall needs to be portable or fixed. If portable, then it needs to be small in size.

o The fabric - Depending on the size of the design wall, we need to buy fabric for both the front and the back, and cut it to the preferred size. The fabric used at the back can be the same that is used in front. We must keep in mind not to use too heavy a fabric. If the design wall is big enough to require seaming together the fabrics, using a flannel sheet can be considered. It is a good idea to pre wash all fabric used.

o The batting - Polyester is not a first-rate option for a design wall since it tends to have a good deal of loft and pills. A total cotton batting is the best choice. Quilts made with cotton batts are popular all the year round. They do not hold heat and make you feel cooler during summers. At the same time, they absorb and trap air and keep you warm on cold wintry nights.

For making the design wall, we need to stick the three layers of fabric that go into the making of the quit, batting and fastening them together with the help of safety pins. Using a walking foot, we need to stitch on the vertical, marked line down the center of the fabric and continue sewing vertical lines out to the rim of the fabric. Once that is done, we need to stitch the horizontal lines in the same manner. Once the entire vertical as well as the horizontal lines is sewn, we need to straighten and square the edges.

Now we are ready to hang our design wall and start using it. We just need to place bits of fabrics, blocks or quilt tops on the design wall, bring into line the corners and boundaries with the stitching lines. The consistency of the flannel will cause the fabric to fasten. There are times when we can use straight pins to break through the batting. This proves helpful in keeping all the sections in place.

Using a design wall will add a new level of creativity and life to your quilting and assure a design you'll be happy with for years to come.

Can heavy duty wall shelves (the kind supported with triangular brackets) be fastened to basement walls?

The walls are painted cinderblock. If yes,would you fasten them directly into the brick with screws or would you attach 2 x 4's to the wall first and then attach the shelves to those?

I would put up wood against the cinderblock. You could use a 2X4, but it may be better to use a 1X4. (The further the anchor the less support it provides). There are several fasteners, but I prefer the heavy duty sleeve anchors. I would never use plastic anchors (too many failures for me). An excellent website for all the pros and cons is:

Acoustic Guitar Black

David Gilmour has made his Black Fender Stratocaster very Iconic through his signature melodic playing that makes our spine tingle every time we listen. His now famous Black Strat was used throughout his most successful career and used on albums such as Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall. Over the years Gilmour changed parts of the guitar to look more appealing but more importantly changed parts to improve the sound. He wanted it to give off a nice bluesy clean crisp sound with great sustain and make the sound unique to him and his playing.

Around 1987 onwards with Pink Floyd, David Gilmour made use of a candle apple red coloured Fender Stratocaster in which he added EMG pickups to. This guitar was used In Gilmour's solo album, About Face in 1984, however, this was Gilmour's main guitar in the Pink Floyd era from 1987 and used in the Momentary Lapse of Reason and the Division Bell albums and also used on tours such as Delicate sounds of Thunder in 1989-90 and The Division Bell tour 1994-95. Gilmour also used the Red Strat on some of the songs on his latest work, On An Island tour with Shine On You Crazy Diamond being one of them in which he usually seems to use this guitar for.

Gilmour actually stated that he prefers the Black Strat over the Red Strat as the EMG pickups sound too much like humbuckers. This sounds very much like Gilmour because he is not a real fan of using too much dirty sound he likes a cleaner tone using only some distortion and likes to hear the sounds come out clear and concise.

What is so attractive about a black girl who plays guitar?

I'm a black girl who plays acoustic guitar. I wouldn't exactly consider myself extremely cute. However, I've noticed a lot of white guys take more notice to me. Even if I'm just walking and carrying my case, I get stopped and hit on often. So is it just because I'm a chick who can play? Or is it because I'm a black chick that can rock out? I really wanna know!!

Its because your black and play guitar, to be honest. Usually, its white girls who can play guitar (Im not saying black girls dont, but you're in the minority),and the white guys find that a turn on.
