Will the Severe Spore Drm be the Undoing of the Video Games Industry?

Millions of video game lovers, many of whom were devoted to the widely popular Sims video games, waited anxiously for Electronic Arts newest video game release called Spore. Electronics Arts did not disappoint it's many fans as the $49.99 regular version of Spore, the $9.99 Spore Creature Creator and the $79.99 Galactic version of Spore were released without a hitch and were quickly snatched off the retail stores shelves. Although Spore's sales didn't quite match the volume of sales of video game monoliths Guitar Hero III or Grand Theft Auto IV, it did very well. It is usually about a week after a video game release when the people who bought the game begin flooding the Internet with either their personal praise or damnation of the video game. They talk about things like game play, graphics speed and resolution, end game, online play, character building etc. Not this time! With Spore, the talk was all about its DRM!

What is DRM? The copyright protection called DRM is an acronym for Digital Rights Management, a term used to describe the different techniques for restricting the free use and transfer of digital content. DRM is used in a number of media, but is found most often in music and video files. Many of people believe that DRM should stand for Digital Restrictions Manager being that it manages users restrictions while taking away their rights. Companies like Apple began using DRM under the auspices of fighting piracy. Has it worked? You tell me. After the news of the type of severe DRM Electronics Arts put on Spore spread to future buyers, it took only days for over 500,000 illegal copies of the Spore video game (without DRM) to be downloaded from P2P BitTorrent sites on the Internet. Does DRM work? No! It ticks people off. If you don't believe it, ask Amazon.com, where thousands of people unhappy with Spore's DRM restrictions gave the new video game a lowly one star rating. Thanks to DRM, Spore has become the most pirated game ever.

So, what was so bad about Spore's DRM to get so many people in an uproar? Here is what it is all about and I am going to tell you from first hand experience because I purchased the $79.99 Galactic version of Spore and after one more download, the game will be worthless. Because my video card was not set perfectly to run Spore, I received a warning message after the first installation that I needed to change my video card settings and reinstall Spore again or the game would not work. One installation used. I did what was required and reinstalled Spore again. No error messages this time, the game works wonderfully. Two installations used. So why am I counting installations? You see, with Spore's DRM restrictions, the purchaser can only install the game three times. After the third installation, your bought and paid for game of Spore will be nothing but a worthless piece of plastic. You can play it, but you will never be able to install it again. So you pray nothing goes wrong with your computer because you won't be able to install Spore to a new one. If I would have known about Electronic Arts DRM restrictions for Spore, I never would have purchased it and I may have gone as far as joining the other 500,000 so-called pirates visiting a free game downloads site to download a DRM-less version.

Some folks say that a company should be allowed to protect their copyrighted products, and I agree as long as they don't take the rights away from the new owners, the people who have purchased those copyrighted products. I want to first say that I don't necessarily hate the idea of copyright protection but I do hate the way DRM is being abused by the companies. When a person buys a copyrighted product, the copyright should now belong to the new owner along with the product. As far as I am concerned, when I purchase something it should be mine to do with as I please. As long as it does not involve harming, torturing or killing a living creature, I should have complete and total rights to do what I want with that product. Here are some examples of what I mean. If I were to purchase a German Shepherd dog ($800), it is mine. If I want to either sell or give my dog away to someone else, I have every right to do so. If I buy a car ($25,000) and a week later feel like selling it or giving it away, I can because I have the every right to do so. If I were to buy a house ($200,000) outright for cash (I wish), that house would be completely mine to sell or even give it away if I choose. If I have complete and total rights to do what I want with my dog, my car and my house, will somebody please tell me why can I face criminal charges and punishment for doing what I want with my $79.99 game of Spore or any other video game for that matter. Heck, with EA's new DRM restrictions imposed on my Spore video game, I can't even install it more than three times. In truth, Spore still belongs to Electronic Arts even though I forked out my hard earned cash for the rights of ownership. Therein lies the true crime my friends. And the video game industry is wondering why more and more normally honest folks have turned to pirating.

Sadly, video game companies like Electronic Arts are unwittingly causing the downfall of the video game industry with their abuse of DRM restrictions. Piracy paranoia has already taken a huge bite out of the PC and Mac game industry. Remember when stores like Egghead and Electronics Boutique used to be stocked wall to wall with computer games for your PC or Mac. Then they come up with all of these unjust anti-piracy rules that if you open the games packaging there will be no exchanges or refunds allowed. Are you kidding me. With all of the different computer configurations out there due to lack of standards within the industry, you were lucky not to run into a conflict when installing or playing the game. How many of you remember buying a $50 computer game only to have it not work when you installed it. Remember how you felt when you tried to get your money back for a $50 game that you never even got to play only to be told by the suspicious salesman at the stores counter, Too Bad, No Refund, No Exchange Policy Here! A lot of people remember. That is the main reason good honest folk turned to P2P download sites for their computer games in the first place. No risk of losing their money through no fault of their own. Thus began the downfall of the video game industry for PC's and Mac's. Now when you go into a store looking to purchase a game for your PC, all you will find is a little rack of about fifteen computer games tucked away somewhere in the back of a video game store.

Don't look now, but the video game industry is following that same path of self destruction as before, and the DRM restrictions they are putting on games like Spore will be their undoing. If the fact that the Spore DRM policy has caused it to become the most pirated video game in history does not bring about changes in copyright policies, then they will be in deep trouble as an industry. I realize I am ranting but I tend to get ticked off when I am being ripped off and I am not alone here. Head over to CNet or Amazon.com to see what people are saying about the Spore DRM policy. The video game makers had better listen too, because they are on the path of causing their own demise with such a draconic DRM policy. Electronic Arts, the maker of Spore especially had better open up its ears, because over 500,000 people downloading DRM free versions of the video game from Free Game Downloads sites in only a few days makes a thunderous sound. The release of Spore was supposed to be a happy day for all. Instead, EA's punishing DRM policy may have begun the downfall of the video game industry, and that would be a sad day for everyone.

I have a guitar humidifier. You know, so my guitar won't dry out. Can I just simply put the humidifier in the sound hole of the guitar and hang it on a guitar rack on my wall? Or should I put it in a Guitar Case?

ermm it'll be more effective if you put it in the case, that way when you actually go outside the humidifier would be used to your room temperature sealed in the case and not accustom to any hot or cold weather outside. Part Truss Rod

Part Two of this article covered how to properly adjust truss rods and optimize the relief of a bass or guitar based on a standard reference. Part Three will present specific examples describing how to correct certain types of fret buzz, upbowed, backbowed or twisted necks by adjusting a truss rod. Part Three will also describe how to fine-tune a truss rod to optimize an instrument's relief based on its individual characteristics. It is recommended that you read Parts One and Two of this article before reading Part Three. Please read the following article in its entirety before making adjustments to your own instrument.

Correcting Bowing, Twisting and Fret Buzz

The following examples will describe basic truss rod adjustments that will correct some common problems. Keep the following in mind while reading the examples:

1. Truss rods do not lower the strings, nor does their adjustment necessarily improve the instrument's action in every situation.

2. Truss rods only change the curve/bow of the neck. Adjusting the truss rod will not bring the strings closer to the neck, but in some cases may bring the neck closer to the strings, improving action.

3. Adjusting the truss rod alone may not be enough to eliminate fret buzz. Certain fret buzzes may only be corrected by raising the action, leveling the frets, etc. If the truss rod adjustments in this article do not cure the fret buzzes of your instrument, consider consulting a professional luthier.

Example 1: Severe Relief

Playing the frets in the middle of the neck in Figure 1 is likely to cause fret buzz and the amount of relief may adversely affect the instrument's action. To fix this problem, tighten the truss rod (don't forget to follow the procedures for proper rod adjustments detailed in Part Two of this article).

Once you have adjusted out all but a small amount of relief, check the tuning and play the instrument. If the instrument has developed new fret buzzes, you may have taken out too much relief and should loosen the rod slightly. Proper relief generally improves action and reduces or eliminates fret buzz.

Example 2: No Relief

The instrument depicted in Figure 2 may buzz when its strings are played open or fretted, especially if its action is relatively low or the frets are uneven. If the instrument does not buzz at all, its relief is already optimized. If there is fret buzz, loosen the truss rod slightly, re-tune and play the instrument, checking to see if you have eliminated the buzz. Repeat until the instrument no longer buzzes, at which point you will have optimized its relief.

Example 3: Severe Backbow

The guitar in Figure 3 playing any fret below the middle of the fretboard probably causes buzz. If the backbow is severe loosen the rod significantly, if not all the way, until the neck shows a slight amount of relief. A severely backbowed neck may take as much as a day or two to adjust to the lack of rod tension; be prepared to set the instrument aside and wait.

If the backbow does not go away, do not despair. If the instrument has a two-way (double action) truss rod, you are in luck! A two-way truss rod can cause a backbow or an upbow to the neck. To add relief to a neck with a double action truss rod, simply continue to turn the adjuster in the loosening direction until the neck has a small amount of relief. If the instrument has only a single action truss rod and the neck does not show any relief, consult a luthier or repair technician.

Example 4: Twisted Neck

Twisted necks cannot normally be corrected by either single or double action truss rods alone. Twists can be taken out in instruments with two independent truss rods in the neck. The dual rods can be independently tightened to correct the twist. For example, a clockwise twist could be corrected by tightening the rod on the bass side and/or loosening the rod on the treble side. Dual truss rod systems are relatively rare however, so other means to correct the twist must be used. A twisted neck can sometimes be corrected by changing some of the strings. Adding heavier gauge strings to the side that has less twist may improve or correct a twist. Conversely, switching to lighter gauge strings on the side with more twist may have a similar effect. If the latter or former methods fail alone, they can be combined to have a greater effect on the twist.

Fine Tuning a Truss Rod

Most guitar and bass necks require about a business card's thickness of relief to optimize their performance. Every instrument has its own unique characteristics and quirks however, and most can be further optimized by carefully fine-tuning their truss rods. To fine-tune the truss rod of your instrument, first adjust it until it has a business card's thickness of relief. Next, play all of the frets for each string, listening for fret buzz.

If there is no buzz:

1) Tighten the truss rod slightly, further reducing the relief.

2) Re-tune the instrument, allow the neck to adjust to the increased tension and play all of the frets for each string, once again listening for buzz.

3) Repeat steps one and two until you notice some fret buzz, then loosen the truss rod just slightly enough to eliminate the buzz.

If there is buzz:

1) Loosen the truss rod slightly, increasing the relief.

2) Re-tune the instrument, allow the neck to adjust to the decreased tension and play all of the frets for each string.

3) Repeat steps one and two until the fret buzz is eliminated.

Once you have followed through with the above steps, you will have successfully fine-tuned your instrument's truss rod.

Given the information in Parts One, Two and Three of this article, you should now have a fairly thorough understanding of truss rods and how to use them to improve your instrument.

where can i buy parts for building my own guitar?

im making a guitar and i have gotten most of it dont but i cant seem to get my hands on a truss rod and a Fret Board.

the guitar is a neck thru so it isnt possible to buy a neck on ebay or carvin.com (which has everything else i need to build a guitar) as the body is pretty much a part of the neck.

anyway its possible for me to make a fretboard from scratch but i do not have the facility to put the metal frets on it and i dont want a fret less.

can anyone help me?? i have spoken to people i know who have made guitars and they only got them by breaking up guitars or just not using 1, but with the choice of neck i have there is a greater chance of warping so a truss rod is pretty important.

i coudl buy a cheap guitar and break it up (which would be fun) but its a waste of money since i already have everything needed for the guitar. can anyone give me some advice?

Spring cleaning

Ultra Uranium (tsx: V.ulu) Assays Shareholder Confidence

On Feb. 13, 2007, Ultra Uranium (TSX: V.ULU) released a 43-101 technical report on its Kalnica-Selec property in Slovakia, which prompted the company’s stock to fall into a tumble from which it still hasn’t recovered. Ray Roland, President and CEO, believes the stock price will bounce back once investors realize the potential of the property.

“We think there’s considerably more uranium there than was reported,” Roland says. “The recent 43-101 was indicative of the quality of the deposit only to the point that it had been taken during the exploration at the property in the ‘70s and ‘80s.” Roland is confident that once Ultra completes confirmation drilling and reports results from mineralized holes that weren’t included in February, their next 43-101 is going to look far more encouraging.

The property, located in Slovakia, had a substantial amount of work done under government sponsorship during the 1970s and ‘80s. With inferred resource estimates in place Ultra is confident, based on past work, that they will have better core recovery than in previous drill programs, which averaged only about 40%.

Relying on historical data only, Ultra estimates the resource to be 5,489,727 lbs U3O8 or 3,957,045 t with a weighted average of 0.053% U3O8 at a thickness of 3.4m over the Kalnica, Selec and Krajna Dolina zones. However, these were historical results only and not 43-101 compliant.

When asked if mediocre results account for the decline in stock price that we saw following the February news, Roland says, “I think the 43-101 had something to do with it, but also a lot of warrants were exercised, there were a lot of low-priced shares and some investor panic when they saw the price drop. So there was a combination with market factors there. We’ve been telling investors all along what to expect, so from our point of view there were no surprises. We think these people will come back into the market.”

Ultra’s immediate plans include confirmation drilling so the company can disclose assay results from many mineralized holes that weren’t included in the previous report. Roland is confident that once other mineralized hole results are confirmed and better core recovery is factored in, Ultra will be able to add to historical results. If that’s true, the next report will look much more promising.

Kevin Bambrough of Sprott Asset Management confirms Ultra’s strategy: “Our experience is that in the uranium business, as you go and drill old properties, redo old drill holes with larger cores, you get better recoveries and can show higher grades.”

Roland says that they are awaiting approval of drilling permits and hope to begin a drilling program in May. When asked if he expects permit approval, he said: “We see no reason why we wouldn’t…” and added that they “expect to get them in a week or two.” What underlies this confidence? Roland explains, “We’re going to outline to Slovakian permitting officials everything that we plan to do.” And when pressed about public opinion in Slovakia, which hasn’t always been favourable regarding Tournigan Gold Corp’s uranium project, he stated, “We’re going to take care that we go in and speak to the local people… to make sure they know we’re not going to disturb their environment.”

Dr. Bohumil Molak PhD., P.Geo, independent geologist, qualified person and author of Ultra’s February 43-101, is originally from Slovakia and helped to explain the process that Ultra will need to go through to obtain the critical permits needed to continue work on the project. Dr. Molak noted that Ultra must apply for permits from “The District Office for the Ministry of The Environment and the District Mining Office” which seeks out “conflicts of interest with pipelines, electricity transmission and forestry.” Dr. Molak also added that there are no conflicts of interest on the Kalnica-Selec uranium project.

Dr. Molak said that local landowners would have to be consulted and may “ask for small [amounts of] money to use their road or their property.” Uranium mining can be a sensitive issue for people concerned about health, safety and the environment and is more tightly regulated than other mineral mining. Other uranium projects such as Tournigan’s have recently met with opposition from environmental groups. Molak thinks Ultra may be able to avoid disruptions by working with the local community.

“We want to be pro-active,” he says. “We want to organize meetings with the community and explain how [the project] will be environmentally-friendly and not harm the environment at all. Many people may be quite favourably oriented, for economic reasons. Miners who worked on the project 20 years ago will possibly come looking for work in the mine.”

We also know that each power switch replacement is an unique and generally complicated procedure; despite the many differences among switch replacements though, there are a few general guidelines that apply to power drill switch replacements as a whole. For the benefit of all those go-getting craftsmen out there, I've compiled some of these universal tips and guidelines to make your specific switch repair a bit simpler on your psyche.

First Things First: As always, we'll begin this repair by ensuring the tool is entirely disengaged (and securely laid-down) before carefully cracking into the tool's body; be sure the tool is unplugged or sans battery and, for all intensive purposes, "off." Keep your parts and pieces organized as you dissamble the tool; this will be significantly helpful during reassembly - if you are especially unfamiliar with the tool or with repairs like this one, it is not a bad idea to make notes concerning what goes where.

Disassembly: First, the drill's housing will usually meet and fasten together symmetrically down the length of the tool; Remove the screws or fasteners that secure the housing together and neatly set them aside. Remove the top half of the housing to expose the tool's interior and set this aside as well. From here, some tools will allow you to directly access the switch after splitting the housing, others, however, may require you remove a few other parts first (i.e. the transmission, which after pressing the selector lever will have to be very carefully (with emphasis on "very carefully" please) joggled from its space. Reinstallation of the transmission is a bit trickier than said joggling, but, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it). Should your repair require further part removal, take care to be cautious and organized to avoid any confusion or problems during reassembly.

You may also need to remove the switch's forward/reverse lever before gaining clear access to the switch assembly. Take special notice of its orientation before removing it from the assembly. Once your access to the assembly is uninhibited, carefully remove the screws or fasteners securing it the the tool. This brings us to the switch's wiring; this is the most difficult and certainly the most important step in the repair process so it is vitally important to be both thorough and patient.

Switch Wiring - Study and Diagram: First, perform a good, solid inspection of the switch's wiring and their arrangement. You may consider marking certain wires with markers or tape to avoid any confusion or cross-wiring (which, of course, will overheat the tool and literally destroy the tool's battery or components). Note the wires leading into and out of the switch assembly (i.e. wires leading in from the tool's power source, and leading out toward the tool's motor), note their orientations, their colors, and make precise notes and a diagram of the wiring's exact arrangement as they lead into and out of the switch assembly. Be as thorough and specific as possible as this will help you immensely during reinstallation. Be aware that wiring configuration varies greatly from switch to switch. Note also that VSR switches plug directly into the battery and therefore do not have incoming wires, this, of course, makes the VSR switch replacement much simpler, but, I digress.

Old Switch Removal and New Switch Installation: After you have completely diagrammed the switch assembly, remove the incoming and outgoing wiring from the old switch which you will then remove from the tool. You will need a small pick or "dental-like" tool with a sharp point and a stiff, wire-thickness shaft; use this to pull and push your wires where necessary. Carefully following your diagram, reconnect all wires to the new switch and securely install it in the old one's place. Some technicians remove and replace wires simultaneously by disconnecting one wire from the old switch and immediately reconnecting that wire in the same manner to the new switch. This method, however, does not discount the value of good notes and a good diagram, but might, nonetheless, prove a helpful tip. Next, ensure that all wires are exactly, properly, and securely connected and fastened into place. Some wires will require a bit of soldering at their tip to stiffen and more reliably secure it; this is fairly simple and works to provide a generally better connection. Many switches will also have a snapping or "trap-door" mechanism to snap each wire in its place. Before fastening-up the tool housing, make certain there are no straggling or protruding wires that might be pinched or otherwise compromised during reassembly.

Reassembly: Here, you will be thanking your lucky stars that you were so thoughtful and organized from the very first of this procedure. Simply move backwards through the disassembly process, and with a bit of caution and patience you should be put back together in no time. There are a few more steps, however, if you're reinstalling the tool's transmission; first, reinsert the transmission into its place leaving a bit of space between it and the motor housing. From here the transmission must be locked into place with the tool's motor; the drill must be engaged to achieve said locking. Carefully engage the tool (by plugging it in, or reinserting the battery) and very, very gently press the trigger. This should cause the motor to slowly turn until it lines-up with the transmission which should then simply slide into place. Once the trani is secured, disengage the tool and continue reassembly until complete.

Caution and Completion: During both reassembly and disassembly, be especially cautious of the tool's more delicate or plastic components. Also take care to keep the tool's screws and screw holes in good condition as the tool will likely require similar repair procedures in the future. As we all know, stripped screws and screw holes are, essentially, the worst things in the world, be careful to put your screws in straight and to ease them into place. Once everything is back together, give the tool a quick whirl to ensure all came together properly and test each of the tool's features for successful performance. For example, run the tool in forward and reverse, run it at different speeds, adjust its torque, and perhaps even drive a screw or two. This should indicate whether or not the tool has been properly reassembled. If all is well, then you are done and should walk taller for having completed such a task.

i have a switch in my room that has a top and bottom. when you push the top the bottom pops out and the light ?

The switch you describe is an old-style light switch. It works the same way as a regular toggle switch.
