Electric Guitar Amp

The electric guitar was invented by a very talented man who went by the name of Adolph Rickenbacker. The first complete setup was back in the 1930's, which was only a mere 70 years ago. On the other hand, the Classical guitar and the Acoustic Guitar have been around for many centuries. There is evidence that dates back to 1800 B.C., that shows the presents of guitars, or similar instruments. There is really no comparison between todays electric guitars and the past. The evolution of electric guitars has been nothing short of amazing. This article will give you a brief history of the electric guitar.

Adolph Rickenbacker manufactured his fist electric guitar in the early 1930's, and equipped it with tungsten pickups. These pickups would sense the vibrations from the strings and convert them into electrical currents. The currents are relayed into the amp and produces sound.

• Semi-hollow body are what the older guitars were know as. They were called this because they had sound holes in the body of the guitar. This style of guitar is still very popular today.

As the Big Band era approached in the 30's and 40's, the use of electric guitars became more popular. Plugging the guitar into an amplifier would give the much needed sound levels to be heard over the loud surroundings of the bands.

A guy by the name of Les Paul is an excellent musician, but if for some reason you don't know this name, he is the inventor of the solid body electric guitar. Les Paul invented the fist solid body in 1941.

This type of guitar is made of one piece of wood and has no sound holes. You are able to simply plug into an amplifier and start thrashing. Paul's first original guitar he made was nothing to brag about. It consisted of nothing more than a rectangular body attached to the neck and six steel strings. However, a modern day Les Paul is simply a thing of beauty.

It was in the 50's that Gibson hooked up with Les Paul and presented the Gibson Les Paul to the world. From that day there was no turning back. The Gibson Les Paul has been a major success for over 50 years, and is considered the most popular selling electric guitar on the market. One guy very partial to the Gibson is Slash from Guns n' Roses.

Leo Fender soon became the next big thing in solid-body guitars. Leo invented the Fender Broadcaster in the late 40's. The Broadcaster was introduced to the public in 1954, but instead of Broadcaster, it was named the Fender Stratocaster or Fender "Strat". The Fender Strat guitar was very different from the Gibson in the fact the the Strat had a different body shape, used different hardware, and was much lighter. Despite these differences, the Fender has become the second favorite guitar among musicians. Musicians such as Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and many others play the Fender Stratocaster.

Today, there are many other guitar manufactures that produce solid-body guitars. Here are a few:

Can I use a Line 6 Spider III electric guitar amp with a bass guitar?

I noticed a Line 6 bass amp in a Musician's Friend magazine that was identical to my Spider III, with the exception of the name. I am planning on purchasing an ESP 104 or a Yamaha bass, and was wondering if I could simply use the amp I had for decent sound, and simply for practice purposes. Can I do so, or do I need to buy a new bass amp?

Yes, you can do that, but you won't get a great bass sound. They are just built differently, and a guitar amp won't give you that deep boom sound like a bass amp would.

But if you just want it to practice on a get a feel for it, then I guess you will be fine.

Electric Archtop Guitar

An acoustic guitar, compared to an electric guitar, uses only its natural acoustic sound to make it audible. There are a variety of acoustic guitar types available in the market today, such as classical guitars, archtop guitars, Flamenco guitars, or Steel-String guitars. Acoustic guitars can be used in a variety of music types, such as slow acoustic songs, country or blues, therefore, making it possible for a beginner to start with a variety of music styles to practice with.

If you really plan to be involved in guitar-music playing, it is important that you consider these great points in starting your guitar music expedition:

1. Buy a guitar with a good sound. And by good sound it means that you buy one with a Great Tone, so that you will be satisfied with the music that it creates and at the same time, give you a real guitar tone. If you buy a guitar with a bad tone, you may not be able to hear the notes right, and there may be difficulty in tuning it to the standard.

what type of strings to use on archtop guitar?

i have an old 1950s kay archtop guitar, what kind of strings should i put on it? electric? acoustic? heavy, light? i just dont know

I would suggest a light gauge set of Electric Guitar Strings. This will minimize neck warping. I use Ernie Ball gauge 9-46.

So you've bought and decided to learn to play guitar. You get home, sit down, and start trying to play. Uh oh , what's that? Your fingers are too fat to play the guitar? So now you gonna let your investment and stubby fingers get the best of you? If you decided you wanted to play guitar and were serious about that choice then you should have the determination to get passed having wider fingers.

First of all, anyone can play the guitar. Yes, anyone, even you. Just because you think your fingers are too fat to play guitar shouldn't get in your way. People have done it before you, and will keep on doing it after you learn. Look at Roy Clark. This country music musician, who so happens to have short fat fingers, not only plays country guitar but the banjo and classical guitar among several other instruments.

So where to start? From the beginning like everyone else. There is no formula or special technique to learn. The only way to get past it is practice, practice, practice. Sure, it may be discouraging at first. Eventually through time and practice your fingers will become accustomed to playing and may even slim down some.

Now, at the beginning, your fingers will soft as your not accustomed to playing the guitar yet. Because of this softness, when you press on a string it may seem to press up into the tip of your finger allowing excess skin to deaden another string. This will happen until you begin to create callouses on your fingertips. The callouses being a harder surface than your normal flesh will not sink down around the string as they are now without it.

However, when you are in the market for a guitar, take into account the width of the neck. A Classical Acoustic Guitar normally has a thicker and wider neck as apposed to a electric guitar. One trick that can be done is take a 12 string guitar and remove the octave strings to convert it to a 6 string, allowing more fingering room.

Lastly, check how your gripping the neck. If you are resting your palm of the left hand on the back of the neck try adjusting your thumb against the middle of the back of the neck. This will help pull more of your fingers towards the top of the neck and aid in stretching and fingering the strings with your fingertips.

So next time you think your fingers are too fat to play guitar, just remember all you gotta do is put your mind to it and practice. When they say anyone can play guitar they mean anyone...including you.

What strings would you recommend for a deering banjo?

Ive been looking at picking up some extra strings for my new(and only) deering banjo. There are so many different brands etc out there that im not sure which ones to get? Anyone have a particular brand they like? any to avoid? Also how do i know what thickness to buy? Thanks

You should have gotten an instruction manual with your Deering. If you didn't, you can contact the company at deeringbanjos.com. The manual or the web site can tell you what they feel are the best strings and what gauge to use for your banjo. If you e-mail the company, Janet Deering herself will probably answer you. They are a great company to deal with and are very, very helpful. My husband has owned 3 different Deering banjos and has loved them all.

How To Find The Right Guitar Amp

Choosing the right amplifier for your guitar is by no means an easy task.  Usually a guitarist will think of style, as well as price first, when considering options.  Assuming you have bought a guitar recently, this guide will suggest a few tips, for buying a new or used amplifier.  There are dozens on the market – with low to "sky's the limit" prices.  Assuming that you are a beginning or aspiring guitarist, this guide should give you some guidance.  Perhaps you have just bought a Fender, Epiphone, Gibson, Dean, Ibanez, Kramer or other guitar, of fairly good to good quality, you will need a good amp to compliment your style.

One cannot think of a guitarist performing live, without thinking about their guitar to some extent.  Visualizing Jimi Hendrix's "Stratocaster" with a wall of amplifiers behind him, — yes the much emulated and desired Marshall Stacks, which are quite expensive.  Eric Clapton, in his early years, preferred Marshalls as well, though he did also prefer to play a Les Paul, or his legendary "The Fool" SG, before he switched over to a Stratocaster as well.  Speaking of "The Fool's" current owner, Todd Rundgren, who prefers an old Fender Mustang, is known to like the crispness of Peavey amplifiers.  I have owned several Peavey amplifiers, including a P.A. and must admit, they are really hard to beat for clarity of sound.  I also owned a Marshall Stack 100 Watts at one time, and attribute much hearing loss from it.  Honestly, I think the same classic sound, with less decibels can be achieved, through smaller amps.

Really you must ask yourself, in relation to the guitar you have, what kind of sound are you wishing to project?  Will this be acoustic?  Straight ahead Rock and Roll?  Country?  Blues?  Heavy Metal?

What kind of budget are you on?  If you are like me, I would rather start with a smaller amplifier to get a feel, for how I like the sound and how it sounds with the guitar.

SOLID STATE VS. TUBE AMPLIFIERS

There are many guitar purists who swear by tube amplifiers over solid state.  They want that warm crunch or presence of vintage tube analog sound.  The cost of a vintage amplifier is expensive.  One can also emulate or simulate the sound of a tube amplifier, from effects pedals, such as Ibanez Tube Screamer, which is quite popular, for this purpose.  Behringer and Peavey have smaller amps which sound fairly good, with trans-tube technology, in relation to the vintage Fenders, Vox, and Marshalls.  But for our purposes, we shall focus on solid state amplifiers due to cost for the beginner, versatility, and the simple fact, that digitally the sound can be reproduced, to an extent, only a professional would notice.

$100 Budget

Let us assume that you have $100 to spend on an amplifier at this time.  Note, you can always add effects pedals.  In addition, due to digital technology, you can also purchase pedals which will simulate all the classic and vintage amplifiers.

There are inexpensive practice amplifiers out there ranging from $30-80, but it would be safe to say, that the bedroom, backstage or den is the only context you will be able to use them in.  Usually they are about 10 Watts of power, although good in tone, you may want to consider something that can be used in other atmospheres, such as jamming along with friends, or even having enough power for small clubs, or coffeehouses.  Among those smaller amps for practice:

Rogue, Peavey Audition, Rocktron, Ibanez, Behringer V Tone, Kustom, Fender Frontman 15G

Behringer Ultracoustic, Pignose, even a 10 Watt Marshall

These amplifiers may be what you are seeking if you are considering to mic them through a P.A. System, or you really just want an amplifier, to jam along with songs in the comfort of your bedroom, but it is best to consider amps starting in the 15 watt range and going up from there.

By the way, don't feel embarrassed by the use of pedals and effects you will find that most guitarists use them.

Lastly, you may want to get a custom handmade amp built for you by someone like Jack at jacksaxe.com. Custom amps have the advantage of being built to your desires and needs.

Whatever you do, make sure that you have done your research before buying an amp. You will be glad you did.

Is the Takamine GS330S G Series Solid Top Acoustic good for beginners?

I want to start teaching myself guitar, and I'm looking for a good, but not too expensive, acoustic guitar to use. Is the Takamine a good investment? I heard it's for more intermediate players.

I think the combination of a cedar top and a dreadnought body is dreadful. Cedar is warm to begin with and a dreadnought is the most bass-heavy body of all. Plus, cedar is very soft and dents and dings very easily.

A Takamine is not an investment per se. It's made in Asia and will never increase in value. There are other Taks I like a lot better than that one. Keep looking.
